How to find out if a Windows  is running a 32-bit version or a 64-bit version

You may have many options to determine whether your computer is running a 32-bit version or a 64-bit version of the Windows operating system.

1. System Properties

1) Run sysdm.cpl or open System Properties.

2) Click the General tab. The operating system appears as follows:

For a 64-bit version operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Version < Year> appears under System.

For a 32-bit version operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version< Year> appears under System.

If it is Vista, type system in Start and select System

2. System Information.

1) Click Start, click Run, type winmsd.exe, and then click OK. If it is Vista, type system, and then select System Inforamtion.

2) In the details pane, locate Processor under Item. Note the value.

If the value that corresponds to Processor starts with x86, the computer is running a 32-bit version of the Windows operating system.

If the value that corresponds to Processor starts with ia64 or AMD64, the computer is running a 64-bit version of the Windows operating system.

3. Set command line

1) Click Start, click Run, type set.

2) Check the PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE. If it is PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE=x86, you are running 32-bit version. If it is 64-bit, it should show PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE=ia64.
