Case Study – Nslookup can't find server name for address x.x.x.x and Non-existent domain Situation: When the workstation can’t join the domain, we use nslookup to find the status of the DNS. The nslookup displays this message: “DNS request timed out. Timeout was 2 seconds. The nslookup displays this message: “DNS request timed out. Timeout was 2 seconds. *** Can't find server name for address 192.168.10.1: Non-existent domain *** Default servers are not available Default Server: chicagotech.net Address: 192.168.10.1 Troubleshooting: You can ping the server by IP or FQDN, but you ping –a witch doesn’t display the server’s FQDN. Resolution: The "nonexistent domain" message means nslookup can't map 192.168.10.1, the IP address of its name server, to a domain name. Adding the PTR records for the server fixes the issue.
