Can I install exchange on a DC

You can install Exchange on a DC, but it is not recommended. There are some issues you should be aware of before installing Exchange Server 2003 on a DC.

  1. The GC Failover mechanism will not work and the server must be a Global Catalog server.
  2. There will be a significant performance impact on the DC and Exchange.
  3. Exchange 2003 clusters co-existing on Active Directory servers is not supported by Microsoft.
  4. Avoid the use of the /3GB switch
  5. A shut down or restart of a domain controller running Exchange can take more than 10 minutes.
  6. It is a risk because of all services run under.

Note: If you are short budget, you may want to install Exchange on a SBS.
