How to Create Virtual Machine using Template VHD
Note: We have created a Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter Template Virtual Hard Disk called WS2K8R2SP1DC.vhd. It is saved in HPV-A server C:\ClusterStorage\CSV-SATA01\Templates. To use this Template VHD to create a VM in Hyper-V, please follow these steps: 1. To create a new VM using the template VHD, copy the WS2K8R2SP1DC.vhd from C:\ClusterStorage\CSV-SATA01\Templates of the HPV-A to the location you want to host the VM. Rename the vhd name. In my example, I will run the VM called 2008TS-FC01 from C:\ClusterStorage\CSV-SATA01 as shown below. Note: C:\ClusterStorage\CSV-SATA01 is the virtual folder and physical location is in the SAN. To protect, the Template Virtual Hard Disk is set Read-Only. So, you need to uncheck Read-only on the Properties of the vhd file 2. To create a new VM, please follow these steps: 1) Open Failover Clutter Manager from the Administrative Tools. 2) Navigate to Cluster01.chicagotech.net>Services and applications. 3) In the right pane, select Virtual Machine>New Virtual Machine>HPV-R Note: in most cases, we will install VM on HPV-R because the HPV-B is located in the PSC/DR site. 4) Follow the New Virtual Machine Wizard; enter the computer name and storage location. 5) In the next page, keep the default Memory and click Next to continue. Note: we setup dynamical memory for most VM even it may need 8GB RAM. 6) In the Configure Networking, select Not connection or VLAN1 for the DOMAIN LAN, VLAN 200 for EDU, VLAN 10 for DMZ. 7) In the Connect Virtual Hardware page, check Use an existing virtual hard disk. Browse to the location where you copied the template in step 1. 8) After complete the New Virtual Machine Wizard, start the new VM you just created as shown below.
