Can't access the remote computers after installing SP2

Symptoms: you have two networks with different subnets, network A and network B. After installing XP SP2, computers in network A can access XP computers in the network A but not B, and computers in network B can access XP computers in the network B but not A.

Cause: by default, the Exceptions of SP2 ICF allow File and Printer Sharing within the LAN only.

Can't access VPN after installing XP SP2

Cause: the ICF block the VPN traffic.

Can't ping XP Computer with SP2

By default, SP blocks ping from other computers. To enable it, open Windows Firewall. Select Advanced and click Settings on ICMP. Check the Allow incoming echo request.

Changes for XP SP2 ICF

In Windows XP SP2, there are many changes for Windows Firewall, including the following:

ICF enabled by default
New global configuration options apply to all connections
New set of dialog boxes for local configuration
New operating mode
Startup security
Local subnet restriction
Excepted traffic can be specified by application filename
Built-in support for IPv6
New configuration options with Netsh and Group Policy

ICS doesn’t work after installing XP SP2

Cause: XP SP2 enable ICF on all connections by default and it may block the Internet connection on the LAN connection of the ICS Host.

Some programs may not work after installing XP S 2

After you install XP SP2, some programs may work. By default, SP2 ICF is enabled and blocks unsolicited connections to your computer. For example, 1. You can't play a multiplayer game over the Internet; 2. You can't receive a file that is sent through an instant message program; 3. An FTP client, multimedia streaming software and new mail notifications in some e-mail programs may not successfully receive data; 4. A Web server such as Internet Information Services (IIS), RDC and File Sharing may not respond to client requests; 5 some anti-virus software may not work.

XP SP2 enables firewall by default

To help protect XP computer against viruses or security threats, XP SP2 enables firewall by default. If you experience some issues after installing XP SP2, you may want to adjust firewall settings. For example, for sharing file, you may need to check the File and Printer sharing option under Exceptions.
